Why You Must Finish Your Antibiotic Course (Even When You Feel Better)
Day three of an antibiotic course, the fever is gone, and the remaining tablets look pointless. This is the moment most courses get abandoned — and it is the moment that causes the most trouble.
Feeling better is not the same as being cured
An antibiotic course is sized to kill the infection, not just to make you feel better. Symptoms fade early because the weakest bacteria die first. The toughest ones survive longest — and they are exactly the ones that rebound if you stop early. A relapsed infection is often harder to treat than the original, sometimes needing a different, stronger medicine.
Stopping early feeds resistance
When bacteria survive a half-finished course, they survive because they could tolerate that antibiotic. Those survivors multiply, and the next infection they cause may not respond to the same medicine at all. This is antibiotic resistance, and it is driven more by millions of half-finished courses than by anything else. Your unfinished strip is a small part of a very large problem.
What if you miss a dose?
Do not panic, and do not double the next one. Take the missed dose when you remember unless the next dose is nearly due, then continue normally — the same rule in our guide to what to do if you miss a dose. If you have missed more than one dose, or you are unsure, call your doctor or ask us before continuing.
What if you feel worse, not better?
Side effects — nausea, loose motions, a rash — are a reason to call your doctor promptly, not a reason to quietly stop. Some side effects need a change of medicine; others are manageable with simple adjustments. Stopping without telling anyone leaves the infection untreated and your doctor unaware.
Never save leftovers “for next time”
Leftover antibiotics are not a head start on the next illness — the next infection may need a different medicine entirely, and taking the wrong antibiotic wastes time and breeds resistance. Take leftover tablets to a pharmacy for safe disposal; our guide to disposing of expired medicines explains how.
The rule is short: take the full course, at the right times, exactly as prescribed. If anything about it worries you, the counter at Elegant Pharma in JC Nagar is the place to ask — before you stop, not after.
